“I WANT to” or “I HOPE to”? 🤔 One Word Can Change Your Meaning!
Many English learners think “want to” and “hope to” mean the same thing—but they don’t!
Here’s the difference:
🔹 Want to = A strong desire or intention
✅ I want to improve my English.
✅ I want to travel around the world.
It sounds direct and certain.
🔹 Hope to = A wish or aspiration that depends on circumstances
✅ I hope to improve my English.
✅ I hope to travel around the world next year.
It sounds more polite, natural, and optimistic.
📝 Real Writing Example
❌ Despite the high cost of living, I still love Singapore and want to live and work here for more years.
✅ Despite the high cost of living, I still love Singapore and hope to continue living and working here for many more years.
Why? Because continuing to live and work in Singapore may depend on factors such as employment opportunities or visa status. “Hope to” sounds more appropriate in this context.
There’s another option too!
If you’ve already made a decision, use plan to:
✅ I plan to continue living and working in Singapore for many more years.
Remember:
✔️ Want to = Strong desire 💪
✔️ Hope to = Wish or aspiration 🌱
✔️ Plan to = A clear intention with a plan 📅
Small word choices can make your English sound much more natural and professional.
